22 October - PPO Update
It's been an interesting and difficult owl season this year. As it is in Nature, there are ups and downs that we can't control no matter how much we'd like to.
The decision for us to switch off the webcam proved to be the best one to make. We had the opportunity last night of removing the eggs from the nest and opening up the two eggs, and they were both infertile.
There are a myriad of possible reasons why the eggs were not viable this year:
Perhaps one, or both, of the owls are infertile.
Perhaps toxins in the environment have caused am imbalance that is affecting fertility.
Perhaps the copulation period was rushed and didn't 'get the job done'.
Perhaps it is Nature's way of curbing the owl population numbers which have been on the increase in our area.
The good news is that Pot Plant Owl and Pappa are still making visits to their nest. They were both on the balcony in the early hours of this morning hooting to each other. PPO sits on her telephone pole nearby and we watch her hunt.
We don't believe that the owls will abandon the balcony nesting site - at least we hope that they don't. But of course, we can't be sure as they are wild and will do what they feel is right for them.
As a tribute to our owl family, we are making a 2013 calendar that will be ready by Friday 26th October.

22 ottobre - PPO aggiornamento
E 'stata una stagione interessante e difficile quest'anno. Come è nella natura, ci sono alti e bassi che non possiamo controllare. La decisione di spegnere la webcam si è rivelata la più giusta. Abbiamo avuto l'opportunità la notte scorsa di rimuovere le uova dal nido ed aprirle, erano entrambi sterili. Ci sono una miriade di possibili motivi per cui le uova non erano vitali quest'anno: Forse uno, o entrambi i gufi sono sterili. Forse le tossine nell'ambiente hanno causato uno squilibrio che sta colpendo la fertilità. Forse il periodo di accoppiamento è stato rushed. Forse è il modo naturale di frenare i numeri della popolazione dei gufi che sono aumentati nella nostra zona. La buona notizia è che PPO e Pappa stanno ancora visitando il nido. Erano entrambi sul balcone nelle prime ore di questa mattina , PPO si mette sul suo palo del telefono nelle vicinanze e guardiamo la sua caccia. Non crediamo che i gufi abbandoneranno il posto del nido nel balcone - almeno speriamo che non lo facciano. Ma, naturalmente, non possiamo essere sicuri in quanto sono selvaggi e faranno ciò che sentono essere giusto per loro.
In omaggio alla nostra famiglia gufo, stiamo facendo un calendario 2013 che sarà pronto entro Venerdì 26 ottobre.

Sono contenta che continuino a frequentare il balcone e PPO non debba più covare due uova vuote.

....Abbiamo messo il terriccio nei vasi e PPO e / o Pappa ha deciso di divertirsi. Il risultato? Un grande pasticcio di terreno sul pavimento del balcone quando ci siamo svegliati questa mattina.

PPO is nesting again. She's currently sitting on two eggs, but we don't think they will be viable. From the end of her first attempt this season to the laying of these two eggs, we've seen very little copulating and frantic excitement that is usually typical of the start of each of our breeding seasons. It is past 3 days from the last egg laid, so I don't believe she will sit on any more than these two eggs.
We're not putting on the webcam at this time. The webcam will only go on if the eggs are viable and there is a family to watch.
PPO is doing very well and happily settled into the 'newer' nest again. Pappa visits with food and wakes me up with his hooting. Will keep you posted!

Second nesting attempt for PPO
PPO is nesting again. She started with an egg last Monday, and a second egg on Wednesday. We half expected to find a third egg on Saturday, but it wasn't to be.
I'm not sure if these eggs will be viable. We noticed very little copulating and frantic activity which is usually evident at this stage of the pre-breeding season.
For the moment, we have decided not to turn the webcam back on, until we know for sure that there is a family with chicks to watch. A lesson that I have learned these past few months is that it is heart-breaking watching PPO sit faithfully on eggs that we all knew were not viable (and ended up not being fertilised). We will spare any angst and only switch the camera back on when the right time comes.
Will let you know what happens!

...PPO sta di nuovo covando. Primo uovo lo scorso lunedi, ed il secondo mercoledì. Aspettavamo un terzo uovo sabato, ma non è stato così. Non so se queste uova saranno vitali. Abbiamo notato pochi accoppiamenti e poca attività frenetica che di solito è evidente nella fase di pre-stagione riproduttiva. Per il momento, abbiamo deciso di non accendere la webcam fino a quando non si sa per certo che c'è una famiglia con i pulcini da guardare. Una lezione che ho imparato in questi ultimi mesi è che è straziante osservare PPO fedelmente covare le uova che sapevamo essere non vitali (non erano state fecondate). Accenderemo la fotocamera solo al momento giusto. Vi faremo sapere cosa succede!

Tutto sta andando bene con PPO. Lei segue una routine prevedibile, lascia il nido per il suo palo telefonico, caccia nelle vicinanze per un breve periodo e infine torna al nido e le sue uova.

In risposta ad una domanda: PPO è tornata nel suo nuovo vaso - quello più protetto, ma più vicino al vialetto e automobili. Incrociate le dita!
