Falchi pellegrini a Dayton senza mamma

"The last babies of Snowball will fledge soon.
I almost thought the male was going to fledge today.
I love how his sisters are watching him. They are all so beautiful."

The names and bands of the Dayton chicks was just put on the ODNR website late today:
Names
Light (F) M/47
Crystal (F) M/48
Flight (M) C/56

Additional Comments
Adult female not seen since chicks were 2 weeks old - likely dead.

[Dianadesi]

bellissimi

a dopo...

fanno bene!

This is a history of the Dayton falcons from Betty Ross of the Glen Helen Raptor Center (Yellow Springs, OH). I know it's long, but it's very informative!:

In Ohio the first known successful peregrine nesting was in the late 1980's in Toledo when a pair came in on their own and raised young on the top of the Commodore Perry Hotel. The Ohio Division of Wildlife joined the Midwest Peregrine Recovery Project in 1989 when it hacked birds in Columbus. In 1990 and 1991 birds were hacked in both Columbus and Cinncinnati.

Hacking was scheduled to begin in Dayton in 1992. It turns out it was not necessary, however, because two birds were already there, having come on their own: Mercury, hacked in Cincinnati in 1990, and Rachel, hacked in Columbus in 1991. They mated, but had no eggs or young that first year. They raised two young in 1993 on the Lazarus building, but the next year, 1994, Rachel was not to be seen. Her remains were found several years later in a building where she had become trapped. With her absence, two other females appeared and were seen with Mercury, and may have even fought over the right to be his mate. Since both were banded, their identities could be tracked. The female from Lexington, KY, was found dead under the nest box, and the one from Baltimore, MD, settled in.

Mercury and Baltimore had no young their first year together, but raised sixteen from 1995 through 1999. Then the Lazarus building was imploded along with their nest site, so they moved to the Liberty Bank Building in 2000. Unfortunately their newly hatched young disappeared there, perhaps down a storm drain. When they moved to the Fifth/Third Building in 2001, they once again raised three young. In the summer of 2001 Baltimore was badly injured and later died. Another female appeared the next spring, 2002, and became Mercury's current mate. She is Snowball, who was banded in Cleveland in 2000.

Mercury and Snowball chose a new nest site, a box on the AT&T Building, where they raised three young named Amelia, Terra, and Talon in 2002. It was the first year for Dayton's Falcon Cam, allowing an up-close view of the nest box and its occupants. In 2003 Mercury and Snowball had two young, named Orville and Wilbur, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight. In 2004 there were four young, Dragon, Raider, Flyer, and Jefferson, in 2005, three young, Earhart, Wright, and Lindbergh, and in 2006 four young, Nimbus, Stratus, Cumulus, and Cirrus.

Mercury, now 17 years old, is an exceptional peregrine. He has had three mates and successfully raised 37 young, all in Downtown Dayton. Best wishes this year, Mercury!

When the Lazarus building was imploded, it was thought Mercury had perished along with the nest. Baltimore was sighted and identified shortly after the building's destruction but Mercury was not. To the relief of Dayton's falcon fans, Mercury was at last, spotted along with Baltimore.

Mercury & Baltimore's daughter Liberty nests along with Freedom & Roosevelt's son Flash at the Cleveland Clinic.

Mercury & Snowball's son Orville has nested at the Rhodes State Office Tower in downtown Columbus since 2004.

In pratica, chiedo agli esperti come possa o potrebbe funzionare.
