The first egg was laid on 31 October 2009 and we had 17 albatross eggs in total. A major milestone was achieved in January 2010 as 100% of the fertile eggs produced successfully hatched - a first in 16 years. Another fact that is generating a lot of media interest this year is that there are two 'mums' who have formed a pair bond and are raising a chick.
During the next few months, the chicks will have to cope with heat, humidity, the risk of fly strike and predators. For the next six weeks, their parents will take turns guarding and feeding their chicks. They will then be left unattended while both parents forage at sea for enough food to feed them.
Il primo uovo è stato deposto il 31 ottobre 2009 e abbiamo avuto 17 uova in totale. Una tappa importante è stato raggiunta nel gennaio 2010 il 100% delle uova fertili prodotte si è schiusa con successo – la prima volta in 16 anni. Un altro fatto che sta generando un grande interesse dei media quest'anno è che ci sono due 'mamme' che hanno costituito un solido legame di coppia e stanno crescendo un pulcino.
Durante i prossimi mesi, i pulcini dovranno fare i conti con il calore, l'umidità, il rischio di colpi in volo e dei
predatori. Per le prossime sei settimane, i loro genitori si daranno il cambionella guardia e nel nutrire i loro pulcini. In seguitosaranno lasciati incustoditi mentre entrambi i genitori andranno in mare in cerca
di cibo a sufficienza per dar loro da mangiare.
