Scottish peregrines satellite tagged.
Many of you will know about Roy Dennis' Highland Foundation for Wildlife and the ospreys and other species that he has satellite tagged for a number of years.
Roy recently emailed me with details of another website he has started on which he gives details of the new species he has tagged this summer in The Cairngorms National Park.
They include two juvenile peregrines, a merlin and a hobby and the movements of these birds and other raptors can be followed on his new website which is :

The young peregrines are venturing further from their nest, though within the Highlands area.
The hobby, a true migrant, is now in Senegal though poor signals (due to lack of sunshine) failed to give Roy any track down through the UK or France until the bird reached southern Spain.
It will be fascinating to see where the young peregrines go during the winter. Will they go to the coast? Will they move south and if so how far? Might they come down to the Peak District, even visit Derby?
These are the first peregrines to be sat-tagged in the UK so the information they provide is ground-breaking.
The same is true for the hobby and merlin though hobbies have been tagged in Germany and followed through a whole (African) winter. Amazing what can be achieved as the size of transmittors is reduced, allowing their use on smaller species such as the hobby and merlin.

Falchi pellegrini scozzesi seguiti da satellite.

Molti di voi sapranno che Roy Dennis 'Highland Fondazione per la Fauna Selvatica ha seguito per un certo numero di anni via satellite il falco pescatore e altre specie.
Roy mi ha recentemente inviato una email con il link di un altro sito che ha iniziato il quale fornisce i dettagli delle nuove specie che ha aggiunto questa estate nel Parco Nazionale del Cairngorm.
Essi comprendono due falchi pellegrini giovani, uno smeriglio (falco columbarius) e un lodolaio ed i movimenti di questi uccelli e di altri rapaci si possono seguire nel suo nuovo sito:

I falchi pellegrini si avventurano lontano dal loro nido, anche se nella zona delle Highlands.
Il Lodolaio, un vero migrante, è ora in Senegal, anche se il segnale debole (per mancanza di sole), non ha dato alcuna traccia a Roy durante l'attraversamento del Regno Unito e la Francia fino a quando l'uccello non ha raggiunto il sud della Spagna.
Sarà interessante vedere dove i falchi pellegrini giovani vanno durante l'inverno. Saranno in grado di andare sulla costa? Saranno in grado di spostarsi a sud e se sì in che misura?........?
Questi sono i primi falchi pellegrini ad essere seguiti da satellite nel Regno Unito........
Lo stesso vale per il lodalaio e lo smeriglio anche se i lodolai sono già stati seguiti in Germania............
