"The quail left for Mercury by the ODNR is from the Glen Helen Raptor Center. The reports that he hasn't touched it is not surprising. That doesn't mean Mercury doesn't need it or won't take it.
That is something Juanita and I learned in the 5 months we helped the Ohio Wildlife Center with the Nike and Victory. OWC gave Nike and Victory rats (like the hawks and owls got). When Juanita asked ODNR where we could buy quail, she was told they "didn't know".
Juanita had the newspaper article from the Toledo Blade detailing the injury to Victory's father Fury. Nature's Nursey in Whitehouse, Ohio was providing quail for the Toledo Zoo to deliver to Victory's mother (who was a sister to Liberty of the Cleveland Clinic, BTW).
Laura at Nature's Nursery gave Juanita the name and telephone number of the breeder they buy their quail from. This breeder provides quail to Bob Anderson of Raptor Resource and Dr. Pat Redig's Raptor Center. A call to the breeder quickly got us an order of 50 quail shipped out. We ordered this amount once a month until Nike was taken to a falconer on April 25.
Now Victory, besides being rasied on quail, ate the quail Donna Daniel brought back with her from the Glen Helen Raptor Center when she returned Shadow to the Rhodes Tower in 2005! Nike had never had quail and it took 7 days before she ate her first one.
Victory - now she surprised us! It took 10 days before Victory took a quail and ate it!! We bought fresh quail each trip to the flight cage where Nike and Victory were kept. After Nike and Victory started eating quail, they never again touched another rat (much to the relief of Juanita who had gotten rat body fluids on the sleeve of her coat). We gave them each 1 quail a day, which was okayed by OWC.
Quail is much more pleasant to handle than rats. The prey remains from quail is easier to clean up than the rat remains. We also cleaned up pellets, whitewash and mutes. In a telephone call to Dr. Pat Redig, he stated: "Quail is better for the falcons than rats."
The reason for this long explanation is: Mercury will take the quail if he needs it. Those 3 chicks are growing fast. He's an experienced father but he is 17 years old and I don't want to see him stressed in this current weather conditions of haze, heat & humidity trying to feed his growing chicks and himself. He is an absolutely wonderful father!" (Rita Woods)
