Di quella nidiata sopravvisse lei sola e lo scorso anno non ebbe fortuna.
Ma alla fine dell'inverno è stata ritrovata a Youngstown, cittadina non vicinissima a Cleve, con un nuovo maschio di provata affidabilità, Stammy.
Ha avuto 4 piccoli perfetti che (a parte un piccolo incidente occorso a Crandall all'involo) stanno andando benissimo.

This was an exciting banding, and I was glad to be able to be there and see Strike in action, especially after watching her go through a failed nest season last year at Station Road.
When we walked onto the roof below the elevated part of the roof where the tray is, Strike either heard or saw us and circled, but landed back up near the tray out of view to us below. As Steph mentioned, the chicks were scattered a bit when we first went up. Two of the chicks were together between the bricks at least five feet from the tray, one was even further out seeking the shade of another brick, and the fourth (not shown here) was in a tricky spot below a metal overhang close to the edge of the roof. We surrounded that chick first, as she was a little close to the edge for comfort, although she was blocked from falling over the side by the overhang. You could see that they were all seeking shade, as the tray was in full sun and they had ambulated to a spot more in the center of the roof where the bricks and other materials produced shade.
Strike stood guard, puffing out defensively and kekking. She didn't fly, but nervously moved about as we gathered up the chicks. The four of us positioned ourselves as distractions to her while the chicks were taken. A pulley system was set up, placing two chicks at a time in a bucket and lowering them down the ladder to the lower roof. The last shot shows Strike after we all went back down the ladder and her chicks were taken in to the building to band. Stammy didn't make an appearance and we figured that he must have been out hunting.

Il banding non è durato molto Li ha difesi da sola perché Stammy era a caccia. E con una ferocia notevole. 
Nell'ultima foto, dopo che è tornata la calma nel nido e la madre si è pian piano placata, Strike&Stammy volano insieme nel blu.

Purtroppo anche in questo nido che non presenta pericoli apparenti per la fase dell'involo qualcosa è andato storto.
Crendall ha dovuto essere addormentata per sempre al MRC dove era stata portata perché le sue penne presentavano un'anomalia che sembrava le rendesse difficile sollevarsi. Ma si trattava di ben altro..

Got this update on Crandall from Laurie-- for some reason, Crandall's feather condition is the worst Heather has ever seen! Laurie sent me copies of pics that Heather sent her and we've never seen anything like it-- paper thin with lots of breakage! The best description I can think of is that in some spots it almost looked like a dragonfly wing to me! She was supposed to get to Dr. Riggs for further assessment, but they are concerned about major problems for her.

Sorry to report that Laurie said Crandall had to be euthanized. Apparently, her problems were beyond the incredibly poor feather condition-- she showed signs of neurological problems, and her feet reportedly turned green (which, I've been told could be a sign of toxicity and/or liver function problems).
DOW plans to have her assessed by Dr. Riggs and possibly their research team to see if more can be learned about her condition.
Spero che i segni di tossicità riguardino solo il suo corpo e non siano dovuti ad avvelenamento da cibo, perché questo farebbe temere anche per gli altri.. Nessuno lo ha detto, solo un mio timore. Ma aspetto le analisi del Dr. Riggs.

Un lungo discorso intorno a mezzogiorno.
Forse Boomer dice che si è stufato della scrape di sinistra e anche di quella di destra, che fa caldo e che si potrebbe pensare a una vacanza in Canada. Ma SW è irremovibile, forse preferirebbe il mare, ma tanto c'è il lago sotto casa.. e poi non va bene lasciare il nido incustodito, questo lei lo sa bene..

L'autopsia eseguita su Crandall ha dato i seguenti risultati:
"Dr. Riggs diagnosed the Y-town juvenile with Severe Systemic Chronic Asper. He said her lungs were completely filled with fluid and she had granules throughout her. Heather said that she was already treating this bird for asper and believes there more to it. There could have been something else to start with and it led into that.
Dr. Riggs ended up doing a necropsy on her. I told Heather that Dr. Riggs is pretty good at what he does. When our wildlife officer brought her carcass in you can feel her keel and see it sticks out a little bit. She definitely lost weight."
She was obviously a very sick bird.
Si è trattato di asper (o aspergillosi) sistemica cronica, un'infezione fungina letale che negli uccelli può presentarsi in due modi:
l'aspergillosi nodulare, che attacca le vie aeree, i polmoni e la trachea
e l'aspergillosi sistemica che attacca i reni, il fegato e altri organi.
Il fungo si trova ovunque (tranne che nelle regioni fredde artiche ed antartiche), è favorito dall'umidità e dalle basse difese dell'individuo.
Mi sembra di capire che questa giovane, pur soccorsa per tempo, fosse condannata.
Ho ricavato le informazioni da un forum di falconeria che non ho capito se sia spagnolo, comunque è scritto in inglese.

No, era in condizioni disperate. La cosa terribile è che erano tutti così vispi e sani, le foto sono lì a testimoniarlo.
Ma questo maledetto fungo è difficilissimo da curare, l'ho visto dai falconieri che pure tengono sott'occhio i loro rapaci continuamente.
E mi domando se non si possa prevenire. Contro il trichomonas aviario un vaccino c'è.
