Green lizard for breakfast
Every time, when opportunity arises, Sakers are robbing the prey from the weaker birds of prey, mainly harriers and Kestrels. They may get prey species this way that are normally rarely or not at all can be found on their diet. Likely, this was how they got the European Green Lizard that can be seen on the picture. The bluish head reveals that it was an adult male Lizard. 'Air pirating' is a typical strategy of the species, however sometimes it poses serious risks too. The results of the lab analysis of Gyula – a male Saker tagged with a tracking device in 2009 and found this March in Körös-Maros National Park – arrived in these days. The results suggest that he was poisoned with carbofuran. As falcons do not eat carcass or prey remains – including purposely placed, poisoned baits -, it is very likely that he got poisoned from a bait that he 'pirated' from a harrier. Unfortunately, poisoning on purpose is not uncommon in Hungary, as it can be read in this MME/BirdLife Hungary news
