What a great way to celebrate our 50th birthday- with the 70th osprey egg! All is well on the osprey nest today after our female laid her second egg at around 2am this morning. Alas I missed it as I had finally gone home to get some sleep, but I got a very excited phone call from our Nightwatch team Ainoa and Kirstin to tell me the good news in the early hours. The centre has been buzzing with visitors today come to see the happy couple on their nest. Here are some lovely photos from our HD nest camera:

Osprey Migration Update 19th May

He’s in the UK!!!! Blue YD made it home to the UK on Saturday night and the latest data we have places him in Norfolk as of 8pm last night.

He crossed the channel on Saturday evening – a crossing of about 90 miles- and roosted on the Norfolk coast on Saturday night, about 4 miles inland from Southwold.

On Sunday he hugged the coast, never more than about 10miles from it, and made his way north- it seems clear he is following the shore as a landmark. He did a spot of fishing on the estuary at Wells-next-to-sea and then turned inland. On Sunday night he had found himself by Narford lake, near Narborough, an ideal roosting spot with woods nearby.

So will he stay in England or will he head home to Scotland straight away? Only time will tell!

Osprey Migration News: 21st May

He’s on the move!! Blue YD has started heading north once more and the current data indicates he could be en route to Scotland…
He spent Sunday night roosting in the woods east of Narford Lake. On Monday morning between 7am and 11am he started flying north, once again sticking close to the coast. At midday he crossed the Humber, and then carried on northwards at quite a pace.

By 5pm he managed to get as far as Scarborough and our latest piece of data shows him travelling up the East coast of Yorkshire, through the North York Moors National Park.

At his current pace and direction it looks as though he could soon be crossing the Scottish border, just in time for homecoming!
