The Big Wait
Posted by Laura James-Reim
For the big thaw. Snow in the nest box. Snow on the Circle. Snow outside my front door. Snow on my head - oops, those are gray hairs not snow.
I am waiting, you are waiting and I'm sure the birds are waiting. When will this snow and cold end? By now, we should be around mid- to upper-40s in terms of temps here in Indiana. We haven't even been close for a sustained period of time. They are predicting the 50's in the middle of the week. Can it be true?
I don't mind Indiana winters but usually around this time of year, I AM ready for spring. The signs are there that it is close - I heard a killdeer one morning in the darkness as I pulled out of my driveway to go to work. The robins are turf battling in my yard already. It really is around the corner.
So hopefully, that means we'll soon see little reddish-brown falcon eggs in the nest box. I'd rather the adults wait a bit for warmer weather but I know they know what they are doing and will lay their eggs at the appropriate time. The signs are there - many visits to the box and preparing the scrape for the new family.
I have no predictions of when I think they will lay the first egg. But if I were any of you devoted falconheads, I'd look in almost everyday from now on because this Indianapolis pair has a history of being among the first in the Midwest to do so.
There are three things I have absolutely no control over (well, there are alot more but I have to limit my lack of control for blog purposes - and yes, my sisters would be surprised to hear me admit that). Two are very obvious: 1) the weather and 2) the falcons. The third thing I have no control over - the cameras. Really, really I don't.
And finally - the big wait - well, really it's for the first egg!

Questo vale proprio per tutti:
"I am waiting, you are waiting and I'm sure the birds are waiting."
...but I know they know what they are doing and will lay their eggs at the appropriate time." :D
