Hello everyone, I am reposting some information for those who might have missed the previous postings.

Dear Phoebe Allens viewers,
I understand several of you have asked some questions that I was not available to answer. I am posting some points to help answer some of your concerns and questions.
The food that the rescued hummingbirds and specifically the twins, Ana and Pavan are being fed is a special formula made for nectar eating birds. It is made of tasty ingredients along with minerals, vitamins, sugars and protein. The formula has been designed to meet the required nutrients that hummingbirds need. Their diet comprises of many bugs i.e. the protein as well as the nectar they sip from the flowers.
When hatchlings and nestlings have no and very few feathers they need to be kept warm. Mama does that with her own body temperature sitting on them. As they develop and grow more feathers they can maintain their own body temperature and stay warm.
Learning how to fly is built into their DNA. I do not have to give them flying lessons. They begin to build up their muscle strength with flying exercises while holding on very tight to their nest. Sometimes they can have a mishap and lift off prematurely and land on the ground. If you are there and see this happen you can put them back inside their nest. When they are in a rescue situation and being hand fed, the process is a bit different from natures' approach. Once they have left the man made nest and are able to fly to the perches/branches provided for them in a controlled environment then next is their curiosity about the feeding tube they have been using for food. They examine the outside of the feeding tube with their tongue. Then one morning low and behold they find the source of the food. This is only the beginning of maturity. Many times they will still beg to be hand fed even though they feed themselves. I feed them until they no longer beg.
I have seen this event take place in my garden. I filmed one of the hummingbird fledglings who hatched in my yard sit on a specific branch everyone morning and afternoon and call for his mother to come to feed him. He did this for nearly two weeks. Near the end of the second week I witnessed this fledgling going to some flowers nearby and then racing back to the specific branch to call for his mother. She accommodated him for nearly two weeks then said enough you're on your own.
No imprinting takes place. After 3-4 week period of time from nestling age when rescued and once they have reached self reliance, not begging to be hand fed, fly and hover while feeding on their own from the feeding tube in the cage and are well established, have been acclimated to the outside for several days they are ready for release. I send them off with wishes for a long productive life. They shoot out of the cage and many times don't look back. Some will fly to a nearby branch and allow me to take a quick picture or two. Release day is a bitter sweet moment but that is my objective to return them to nature to be the hummingbirds they are suppose to be.

.......Quando sono stati salvati e nutriti a mano una volta che hanno lasciato il nido artificiale e sono in grado di volare sui posatoi / rami previsti per loro in un ambiente controllato è poi la loro curiosità per il tubo di alimentazione utilizzato per il cibo che li guida verso la maturità. Prima esaminano l'esterno del tubo di alimentazione con la loro lingua, poi una mattina ecco che trovano la fonte del cibo, questo è solo l'inizio della maturità . Molte volte comunque continueranno a chiedere di essere nutriti a mano come succede in natura con la loro madre, anche se si nutrono da soli . Darò loro da mangiare fino a quando non lo chiedono più.
L'imprinting non avviene. Dopo un periodo di 3-4 settimane da quando sono in salvo e, una volta che hanno raggiunto l'autosufficienza , cioè non chiedono di essere nutriti a mano , volano e si librano nell'aria mentre si nutrono dal tubo di alimentazione nella gabbia, sono stati acclimatati verso l'esterno per diversi giorni ecco sono pronti per il rilascio. Io li mando via con auguri per una lunga vita produttiva . Sfrecciano fuori dalla gabbia e molte volte non guardano indietro . Alcuni voleranno su un ramo vicino e mi consentirà di prendere una o due foto rapidamente. Il giorno del rilascio è un momento dolce amaro ma è il mio obiettivo, il loro ritorno alla natura per essere dei colibrì come devono essere.
